Ink and pencil head study of a dragon-oliphant hybrid. Um, with maybe a bit of warthog thrown in.

After viewing 'Return of the King,' my husband and I were discussing the life cycles of the gigantic 'oliphants' and what kind of predators might be able to take them down in the wild (packs of T-Rexs being our favorite concept). Dragons came to my mind, and since in Elfwood dragons seem to have mated successfully with anything that they can get to hold still long enough, this was the next logical step...

This is extremely cool. I love elephants but I hardly ever see them in the woods. A few questions distracted me, though. From which mouth does it eat? Does it eat both meat and plants?

:-) Katherine J. Grantham replies: "I have to admit, I drew it this way because it looked cool, not because it made any sort of biological sense. I'd guess it eats with the regular mouth, and the trunk is really for grasping things, poisoning things with the fang-like barbs, and breathing fire (around corners, at that!). As for what it eats -- anything it wants!

Yeah, more elephants in the woods! That's what this place needs!"

I love how you mixed a dragon with an elephant. If this was a real animal I bet even the natives would run. Great work and a splended job on shading. It looks like the lions arent the only animals to worry about now.

This very detailed for a pencil drawing. You must've put a lot of time into it. The concept is also very interesting. From the standpoint of a science oriented art critic this creature actually looks plausible as an experiment in genetic engineering.
